The New Wave of Sustainable Fashion: How Technology and Circularity Are Reshaping the Industry

The fashion industry now stands at a major crossroads—facing the urgent need to move away from the conventional model of mass production and mass disposal. Sustainability is no longer just a trend; it is a core management agenda that determines a company’s survival and growth. This session, centered on the themes of technology and circularity, explores the frontlines of sustainable fashion and the industrial transformation it is driving. Our speakers include Mr. Shimizu of MicroBioFactory, who leads innovations in material development and production processes through biotechnology such as microorganisms; Mr. Fukuda of KEARNEY, who analyzes global trends and business models in the fashion value chain; and Ms. Kato of amu, who promotes circular systems like resale and upcycling in society. Together, these pioneers—advancing material innovation, AI-driven demand forecasting, and the circular economy—will discuss their practical initiatives and visions for the future. We will examine how technology and new business models can reduce environmental impact while creating new market value, and present strategies for realizing the next-generation fashion industry.
