The Next Frontier of Energy: How Decarbonization and Frontier Technologies Are Reshaping Industrial Structures

Facing the dual challenges of the energy crisis and decarbonization, Japan’s energy industry is now being pushed to undergo a fundamental structural transformation. This session focuses not on supporting individual startups, but on the reorganization and expansion of the entire industry as a whole. The mainstreaming of renewable energy, the realization of a hydrogen-based society, the ultimate potential of nuclear fusion, and frontier technologies such as CCUS (carbon capture, utilization, and storage)—these are no longer distant dreams but concrete national agendas that will define Japan’s global competitiveness. In this session, we will engage in a multidimensional discussion on how Japan’s energy industry can evolve around these key technologies. Beyond simply introducing examples of collaboration, we will delve into forward-looking strategies that address questions such as “Why are these technologies nationally significant right now?” and “How can Japan establish globally competitive industries based on them?” Together, we will envision the future of Japan’s energy sector as the next engine of national growth.
